Buscavam o isolamento e o afastamento do bul\u00edcio das vilas. A seguran\u00e7a dada pela proximidade de Britiande, terra pertencente a Egas Moniz pr\u00edncipe colimbriense e tenente de Coimbra, Viseu, Lamego, Seia e Feira e tutor de D. Afonso Henriques, foi o principal fio condutor destas v\u00e1rias funda\u00e7\u00f5es Cistercienses pr\u00f3ximas ao Vale do Douro. Salzedas teve origem na Abadia Velha, onde D. Teresa Afonso herdeira de Egas Moniz doa terrenos \u00e0 Ordem de Cister para que viessem os monges de Claraval, iniciar esta reformula\u00e7\u00e3o da antiga Ordem de S. Bento.
